IPL Impact Player Rule Explained: Why Players Are Against It

Cricket is always changing with the time, but not every change works well to permoot it. The IPL’s Impact Player Rule is one such experiment that has quickly become a big talking point on the recent IPL. When it was introduced in 2023, many people were thinking that it will be a smart and modern idea to make matches more exciting and interesting.

But by 2026, the situation looks very different according to all cricketing experts. Matches now become very faster and high-scoring, but many players and fans feel that something is missing in which. The natural balance between bat and ball is slowly fading which are making things bad. This blog explains the rule in simple words, looks at its real impact, and helps you understand why it has become so controversial in the IPL and why players are talking about it.

What is the Impact Player Rule?

The rule is so simple but powerful. Before the match starts, each team selects their playing XI and also names 4 substitute players which makes the things so good for batting. During the match, a team can replace one player with one of these substitute players at any time before the 14th over start of the match of the first innings.

According to the rule, the new player can fully take part in the match he can also do bat, bowl his full overs, and can do fielding like a normal player. However, the main thing is that the player who is replaced cannot come back into the game. This one change gives teams a big advantage because they can adjust their strategy according to the situation .

For example, a team can start with extra batting strength and later bring in a bowler when needed to stop the runs. This kind of flexibility was never part of traditional or international cricket, this is the main reason why it has changed how teams plan and play their matches.

What Top Players Are Saying (Real Reactions)

Now in the IPL 2026 Many top players have openly shared their concerns about this rule, which shows how serious the issue is this and how much cricketers are affected from this rule. The players are include in which are:

Shubman Gill:
The indian team's ODI captain said that "Cricket is a game of 11 players. Adding an extra batter makes it one-sided and reduces the challenge."

Axar Patel:
This rule reduces the importance of all-rounders and changes team balance.

Rohit Sharma:
The hitman said about this rule that ,he believes the rule disturbs the natural rhythm of the game and gives too much advantage to batting teams.

Hardik Pandya:
The world's best allrounder said about this rule that If you can easily swap specialists, the value of players who can do both roles goes down.

Jos Buttler:
The England best players said about this that, the Cricket has always been 11 vs 11. This rule changes the basic idea of the game.

Virat Kohli:
The king said about this that he has also hinted that keeping balance in cricket is very important, especially in T20 formats.

When so many experienced players agree on the same issue then, it clearly shows that the concern is real and not just a small complaint about this rule.Which make the rule more ever worst condition.

Impact on Matches and Game Balance

The biggest effect of the Impact Player Rule can be seen in match scores this will shows everything about this rule. Now, scoring 200+ runs has become very common in modern day cricket, and teams are chasing these targets more easily than before in these days. What used to be a match-winning score is now just a normal total score in this modern cricketing season.

Now this is making life very difficult for bowlers. They have less control over the game, and even small mistakes are punished heavily and we can say that in cricket One good or bad over changes the things completely. Captains also find it harder to manage their bowlers because the batting side always has extra strength to handle the different bowlers of the bowling side.

It is the dark reality that high-scoring matches are fun to watch, too many similar games can reduce excitement about these matches. If every match follows the same pattern,  so might be the fans will lose their interest about it because there is less uncertainty and challenge in the game.

The Real Problem: All-Rounders and Team Strategy

The biggest long-term impact of this rule is on all-rounders of any team. These players have always been very important because they give teams balance by contributing in both batting and bowling and gives the captain a chance to utilize them in all conditions mainly when there main bowlers fails to save the runs or giving more runs.

Main thing is that however, with the Impact Player Rule, teams do not need to depend on all-rounders anymore. A team can first use a player just for batting, and later they can replace him with a bowler when needed in the bad condition. Because of this, there is less need for all-rounders in the team.

Shivam Dube is a clear example of this rule he is mostly used as a batter now and rarely bowls. The same is happening with Washington Sundar he is also the main allrounder of the indian team, who is not getting equal chances to show both skills.

If this trend continues, it may affect the future of cricket because fewer players will focus on becoming complete all-rounders. This could create problems for national teams in the long run.

Final Thoughts: Stay, Change, or Remove?

Due to this Rule now IPL become more exciting in the short term. Matches are faster, scores are higher, and fans get to see more action in this IPL 2026. From an entertainment point of view, the rule has been successful in this tournament.

But cricket is not only about entertainment , balance is equally important on both sides. When captains are unhappy, players raise concerns, and the game starts looking one-sided then it means something needs to change to make the things good and affective. The rule may not need to be completely removed, but it should be improved with some changes in which.

A better solution could be to limit how and when the Impact Player is used in their teams. This way, teams still get some flexibility, but the core balance of cricket remains safe. If changes are not made in time, this rule could create bigger problems in the future
